Abstract:

This chapter begins with a description of an artificial intelligence algorithm that is part of an image guided surgery system being developed at several institutions, including the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Brigham and Women's Hospital, General Electric, Harvard Medical School, the Analytic Sciences Corporation, and the Technical Arts Corporation. This description serves as a launching pad for a wide-ranging discussion about the role that artificial intelligence and related fields might play in the future of medicine.
