Language

A lot of hard problems in language just cannot be solved syntactically. It comes down to understanding the meanings of words. Consider these typical examples of semantic disambiguation:
Fred saw the plane flying over Zurich.
Fred saw the mountains flying over Zurich.

The police arrested the demonstrators because they feared violence.
The police arrested the demonstrators because they advocated violence.
